France 2024 Day 6 Haute Dordogne

Thursday, 11 April 2024 19:58

I have three days here in Brive and the first was spent in the Haute Dordogne including along the Corretz and Ceré rivers. It was a chilly start again and everywhere I went I was essentially the only visitor!. Along the Haute Corretz to Puy de Pauliac was interesting as the satnav thought there was no such place. It is there and has a ‘table d’orientation’ with panoramic but not that interesting views along the Corretz. It was then south to the Dordogne for a couple of viewpoints the latter requiring a 10 km detour and a road that was marginally suitable for donkey carts. Intrepid if nothing. These view points are high on the sides of the valley. It is impossible to give an impression of scale but take my word for it the valley is impressive. Between the two and creating my detour I had to cross the river at a little single lane suspension bridge. I was surprised I had not seen a vehicle for miles until I found the road along the river was closed hence my mountainous detour. I then headed down to the Ceré with a stop at the towers of Merle, not open today. Very impressive they are and the limited opening relates to the fact they have historical re-enactments. The gorge on the Ceré creates another panoramic opportunity looking down on the river and railway. I then headed back towards Brive with a stop at the cunningly named Colognes Les Rouge. I wonder why. The loop was almost complete with a quick recharge before the hotel ready for tomorrow. The headline picture is while crossing the Dordogne.

Here is a little industry along the Corretz

This is the village of Aubalzine followed by typical the Haute Corretz scenery

There are plenty of birds of prey around the Dordogne including this buzzard

This is the little suspension bridge and then the Dordogne low and high
