The Joys of the Shuttleworth Collection

Those who follow my blog will know that I am a regular visitor to Old Warden and predominantly post images from the wonderful Swiss Garden. I always have a wander through the Shuttleworth Collection as the aircraft are not in a fixed position. They all can, and often do, fly so get moved around. The photos here cover a visit just before and just after the August 11 flying display. A highlight was the Fairey Swordfish visiting from Yeovilton. It is always a surprise how big this aeroplane is! The Bleriot XI from 1909 is the oldest flying aircraft in the world with an original engine. It is in a group that are occasionally described as the “paper aeroplanes”. As aircraft get moved around a rare moment was a clear view of the Dehavilland DH88 Comet racer without fencing around as the team were bringing in the Sopwith Dove, a sight enjoyed by the summer holiday crowd. There are always little motifs and labels for the keen eye and of course when there is flying there is maintenance. Keeping this brilliant collection airworthy is a non-stop task.
