BRIAN REID PHOTOGRAPHER

Off to Iberia Day 12 - The Edge of the Roman Empire?
Sunday, 19 April 2026 20:43
Another wonderful day in Galicia wandering down to Cape Finisterre, as we call it. Literally it translates to the “end of the earth’. Over the years I have visited a few “end offs”. This one refers, apparently, to the most westerly extent of the Roman Empire but is probably more known in the UK from the shipping forecast! I followed the coast as best as possible from A Coruna taking in a couple more lighthouses, on cliffs with seriously weathered rocks, and a beach which would require wading through a small river to get to the sand. Wrong shoes! Cabo Fisterra is the end of the fabled Camino de Santiago. It did not seem so tough walking the last 350m. I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Some people even came by coach. :-) The only busy places along the route were around bars in small towns where every parking space was taken. I also got mobbed by a coach party at my second lighthouse along the way, Faro Tourinan, but a short walk was all it took to restore my tranquility. Lunch was a pleasant surprise at the only bar at Cabo Fisterra where a nice sandwich and an aqua con gas included a seat on the little terrace for very little cost. In fact eating has been cheap today as almost everything is closed around the hotel on a Sunday. Fortunately the cafe at the football “stadium” across the street provided an excellent “Pollo Completo” and a couple of Estrella beers. The last completo I ate was on Easter Island! The beer should be good because the brewery is 100 metres from where I write this, as the sun goes down, on my terrace. It has been a lovely way to spend a sunny Sunday, shade temperature peaked in the low 20s C but the wind on the coast meant comfort. To top off a great day the hotel has a couple of Tesla destination chargers so we are at 100% to head south to Portugal tomorrow. I’ve added a little captioning to identify the locations and subjects. We start above with the end of the Camino de Santiago and some celebrating walkers. Well done. I’ll start with Cabo Fisterra on the "coast of death".
For orientation there is an outline map is here.

Looking to my previous lighthouse, Faro de Punta Nariga

And here we are!

Those with sharp eyes will see a brave walker on the water’s edge near the middle of this picture.

For a little local colour here is a Galician cemetery and a Galician granary.

Time for a “completo” and a couple of Estrellas at the local cafe

A final picture at the end of a lovely day, ready for what tomorrow will bring.
