Off to Iberia Day 16 - Cathedrals and Wine, Burgos and Rioja

Many will know the “man with no name” but today I was the “man with little hair” as the high plains drifter driver. The first around 130 miles was on fast roads across an endless plain before mountains started to appear around Burgos and then from time to time to the head waters that end up the river Ebro which flows to the Mediterranean a little South of Barcelona. The day ended in Logrono in the wine growing region that is defined by the name Rioja. There is even a wine museum in the city. Burgos has a world famous cathedral and it is remarkable, only from the outside today. It was also an ideal place for Pinchos and a soft drink for lunch on the edge of Plaza Santa Maria looking up at the cathedral. It was popular but not too busy. Another aspect of the day, epitomised by Burgos, is that I was, again, crossing the Camino de Santiago, as I had been earlier at Castrojeriz where I stopped to check out a ruined castle while avoiding pilgrims. I also stopped in Briones in the heart of Rioja country to get a look at the landscape and followed up by pulling into one of the bodegas for a closer look. Logrono has been a surprise. Not only is my ibis Budget hotel just fine, it really is in the city centre, literally one street away from the heart of the action where I enjoyed a very good meal at a “gourmet” tavern of course with a nice Rioja. Even the car park was not as daft as some, like the one in Salamanca, where going from one level to the next grounded the car over what might be  described as steps. Just some scraping sounds but no obvious damage. Sunny and warm describes the weather although it was pretty windy in places. A very enjoyable day and I will start with the star of the show Burgos. There is more to the city than just the cathedral with riverside cafes and restaurants and live South American entertainment from a one man band complete with llamas and puppets. He earned his Euro. I have included a random set of images illustrating todays journey and finish with a selection from Logrono.
