Off to Iberia Day 17 - Following the Ebro to Zaragoza

It has been a short driving day today from Logrono to Zaragoza for my final overnight stop in Spain. This was planned to allow me an afternoon walk in the destination, which worked out well. Technically I was following the River Ebro but for most of the journey it was out of sight. The first part to Tudela, for a look at the cathedral, was along the East side of the valley but high up through mainly agricultural country. Vines, olives and wheat seemed the top picks. From Tudela to Zaragoza was along a motorway to the west of the river, again agricultural. My first proper look at the river was in Zaragoza itself. My hotel was on the edge of the town centre so ideal for a warm wander. Getting to the cathedral in Tudela was a SatNav nightmare. The instruction at one point was turn sharp left which would have been interesting if the ’road’ was more that 4 feet wide! After a few alternative attempts and trying a full car park some distance away I was essentially giving up and heading out and there was a parking space. You beauty. In fact the SatNav should have said “you must be kidding, there is no way you can drive close to the cathedral”. It was worth the hassle for a short walk though the narrow lanes to pop into the cathedral. Fortunately the old adage that problems come in threes is not true as I only had two, the second was getting to charge the car. The superchargers were behind locks gates in a lorry park. I was sitting looking confused when a fellow Tesla driver spotted me and explained. You take a ticket from the entry machine and then get it validated at the petrol station to let you out. Another case of “you must be kidding”. No wonder there were 14 available chargers. Zaragoza has a small interesting old centre with another huge cathedral. Wandering around you quickly end up in lanes which are less than inviting. As I walked up one lane the police were searching two young men. Just as quickly you are back into a street with shops and cafes. Different. I’ll start with pictures from Tudela and then some from Zaragoza. There was a recommended Tapas bar around the corner from my ibis Styles and I thought that was an ideal way to conclude this element of the trip. My confusion of the very simple menu and the lovely owner who had no English meant my Tablas selection was not a selection of Tapas but a selection of cheeses, hams and sausages and actually to be shared! All very tasty and of course the wine was excellent. I could not eat it all but the owner insisted on wrapping the remaining meats in foil for tomorrow. That is lunch sorted for tomorrow. A nice guy in a tiny place with great music playing. A bit of Bonnie Raitt, Leonard Cohen and various blues players. The others in the place all seemed to be on first name terms with the other diners and the one man operator. Not Tapas but a lovely way to spend some of my last evening in Spain.

For orientation there is an outline map is here.
