Off to Iberia Day 2 - I was Quiberon Bound

Thursday, 9 April 2026 21:24

It was a gentle but not very exciting run across the Brittany peninsula from the Normandy coast at Ouistreham to Quiberon on the north coast of the Bay of Biscay. A compulsory stop for coffee and a madeleine while looking at the Mont St Michel was required. I have visited the biscuiterie a couple of times and the fresh warm madeleines and excellent coffee make a slight, very slight, detour justified. I thought it was going to be a wash out from the point of the view of the Mont as it was foggy as I dropped down to the bay at Courtils. Fortunately the warm sun was doing its job leaving just a misty vista to enjoy with my snack. From there it was a cross country run with a couple of stops, the first to charge the car while picking up some lunch and the second to top up for a good start tomorrow. Although Quiberon was my destination for a walk by the ocean and moules et frites at Le Passage brasserie, above, it was also an opportunity to do a little more exploration of the alignments at Carnac. Very enjoyable but very different from my last visit. Now there is no general public access to the stones! There were a couple of school groups inside the fences but that is all. I took a short walk to see the Giant of Manio. It is about 3 metres tall but there is nothing to give a sense of scale. It is a big stone. I followed a large part of route number 2 which gives a good sense of the scale of these alignments. From there it is a short run across the causeway to Quiberon but before then the wind had whipped up and the kite surfers, kite flyers and land yachters were taking full advantage. A nice bonus. I have enjoyed my dinner at the little brasserie where I have had great meals in the past and they were on point again this evening. €14.50 for moules et frites washed down with a lovely Muscadet at €4.50 a glass. You have to love France! Here are some snaps. I’ll start at Courtils then Mont St Michel, Carnac, on the beach and finally back to Quiberon.
