The Supermarine Spitfire is 90 years old this year

The Shuttleworth Summer Air Display was inspired by the 90th anniversary the first flight of the iconic Supermarine Spitfire. The team had arranged as many aircraft from the many different marks of this famous WW2 aircraft as they could in a range of colour schemes including those of versions that flew with the USAF and the Russian Air Force. Quite a treat. I am focusing this post on the Spitfires and will follow up with the many other excellent display aircraft helping to make it a fine day at Old Warden Aerodrome. The final display of the afternoon provided a sight that might just be unique. Nine Spitfires from the range Mark 1 to Mark 19, (not one of each) flying in formations of three and then each group of three putting on a show for us. I have added some snaps of a simulated dogfight between a Spitfire Mark 9 and a Buchon Spanish built Messerschmidt 109 for good measure. Look out for more posts from this day of aviation pleasure
