France Spring 2025 Day 5 - The Cevennes

As a traveller I accept that there will be days when the weather does not match my expectations of the day. This was one of them. I made a loop through a piece of the Cèvennes from and to Alès. I chose three locations as focal points which would also generate an interesting route. The weather forecast changed overnight from cloudy but dry to possible showers but heading out things looked OK, grey, dry and especially clear. Now let’s be clear it did not rain all day, for some of the time it was snowing! Never mind eh! Not a great day to capture the majestic scenery with mountains rising to 4500 feet, deep gorges and quaint towns. I still enjoyed my day out although my slippery road skills came into play. Again I should have had chains but they would have been useless as there was only a little slush in places on the road. To give a sense of the conditions the headline picture is a frame grab from the GoPro which I use on some days for in-car footage if I think it will be worth capturing. It was. The snow was fresh and being blown by a brisk wind. Although not obvious at web image size the snow on the bush below was like horizontal icicles. I did not even make it to my second waypoint, the Climate Observsatory on the highest peak as the road was closed. That all said there were some interesing things to see along the way, starting with a pretty cool waterfall before the weather closed in. This was at the base of the climb to Roquedur le Haut from where I was in high country until dropping back down to Alès. I had planned to investigate a short hike in Roquedur but a combination of drizzle and a path that seemed tricky to find meant a gentle wander around instead. I was greeted by a noisy little dog who followed me for a while. Moving north to the snow line the rain was intermittent but the views were still limited. On occasion there were helpful plans to identify landmarks some more useful than others.:-) At around 3000ft I entered cloud and eventually the snow. The drop down into the gorges towards Verbun provided some relief from the rain and mist. Even in tiny villages the list of first world war dead is almost incomprehensible. At Verbun there was a very creative use of a tree stump. The gorges are steep and high sided but not too narrow. A spectacular climb up onto the corniche along the road in the image took me back up to a plateau which gently dropped down following the D9 back to Alès. There appears to be a book connection by my hotel. Very nice way to finish an interesting and at times challenging day in what is obviously a spectacular part of France, the Cèvennes.
