France Spring 2025 Day 6 - Sur Le Pont d'Avignon

More walking than driving today with a good stroll around Avignon before the short run down the Rhone to Arles and a late afternoon walk into the old city. No rain today just a stuborn overcast. Much milder and this far south time to put the Fedora on. The run to Avignon was gentle countryside with large areas given over to vineyards for the famous Côte du Rhone wines. I followed some Internet guidance on parking which was unusually accurate. There is an excellent free park and ride from the island Piot in the Rhone to a city gate in a bus that takes 5 minutes and appears to be every 10 minutes. Cool! By the seach for an empty space it is clearly popular. My first order of business was to pony up €4 for access to the famous “Pont d’Avignon” or more accurately the Pont Saint-Bénezet. The exhibition was brilliant explaining the history, construction and demise of the majority of the bridge. The view back to the Papal Palace, as shown above, was worth the entry fee. I’ll start todays pictures with vineyards of Côte du Rhone then a spread of snaps from Avignon on the aforementioned bridge and it’s chapel, around the Papal Palace and general street scenes including a local cafe, full of locals, for a 'croque monsieur’ for lunch. I will then add a few from Arles. I have been to Arles fairly recently and visited the Roman ampitheatre so did not enter today. I was probably too late anyway as my hotel is about 25 minutes walk along the side of the Rhone to there and I got to the hotel around 4pm. It certainy got my step count up for the day. Only a few photos from Arles including a ghostly figure on a wall and someone who overdoes window boxes, methinks.
