France Spring 2025 Day 7 - The Camargue

Friday, 21 March 2025 21:28

What a beautiful morning in Arles ready for a trundle around bits of the Camargue. Just 25 minutes from the hotel it was a great way to start the day. I had hoped to see horses and flamingoes and was not disappointed as flamingoes were a first encounter sharing a lagoon with a grey heron and some egrets. Along the way I met some horses, some otters, more flamingoes, ibis and lots of others. I even startled a couple of storks. As I worked my way to the ferry to Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhone, with it’s historic tower and a cute owl, the sunny morning was taking a darker turn. I know of the wind they call the Mistral but had not encountered it before. Wow. As Helen Hunt says in “Twister” when asked what it was like, all she could say was “windy”. Well that describes the Mistral. A quick look around Port-Saint-Louis was enough to convince me that it was time to head for my overnight in Hyeres via the outskirts of Marseilles. Check out the flags at Port-Saint-Louis. Not the first windy day I suggest.  The traffic was heavy but moving and soon I was over the mountains, via Signes, and down to the Mediterranean. Now we all know the Med in France is an expanse of azur sea lined with beaches and posh hotels. Not this afternoon. The positive side is that the hotel is comfortable, has a fine restaurant and, a bonus, a fast DC charging station. With any luck the Mistral will be a thing of the past tomorrow. I’ll start with why a visit to the Camargue is a treat, take you over to Port-Saint-Louis at the mouth of the Rhone and on to Hyeres with a quick stops at the Tesla facility in Marignagn and Belgentier with an interesting wall painting.
