France Spring 2025 Day 20 - Paris in the Springtime

Thursday, 3 April 2025 20:07

I chose the hotel as a convenient place to stay after a visit to Versailles and realised it made an easy entry point into the public transport for Paris so booked for two nights allowing me to spend today in a dash around the main sites of the city. The RER and Metro system sre beautifully integrated and the Navigo pass is rapidly replacing paper tickets, in fact it is now very difficult to buy a paper ticket! The nearest station, Saint-Cyr, is an easy 20 minute walk from the hotel and then the train has you in the heart of Paris in 35 minutes. I picked 7 locations for my day, the Arc de Triomph, Avenue de Champs Elyssé, Place de la Concorde, La Samaritain, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. My day started OK but I had forgotten how long the Champs Elyssé was and how far it was to the Samaritain. Six km later I was at the store only to find that the roof terrace with, according to my dad, the best view of Paris is not now a public place. Dad was right as I have been there before, but not today. The store is still worth a visit. From there everything went just fine with a combination of Metro, RER and shank’s pony on a sunny, warm and a little hazy day. Mind you the cold wind was never far away. I should note that everywhere was packed with people including lots of large tour groups. I heard English, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, German and Russian guides for sure and there was even a Scottish school group at Pont Alexandre III. A popular place and I guess there are now only two tourist seasons in places like Paris, busy and extremely busy. Like my guide on the Amazon at Manaus a few years ago, when asked about seasons, he said there were only two, wet and very wet. Not quite the same though. Here are a selection of snaps as the day progressed. The headline shot needs no introduction and I doubt many photos will need explanation. Where the images may be less obvious they are all a little colour along the way walking and getting on and off transport.
