BRIAN REID PHOTOGRAPHER

Copenhagen to Gothenburg

It was an interesting day starting with a hazy contre-jour crossing from Denmark to Sweden across the Oresund Bridge. I sort of collect bridges, a quaint habit, but as an engineer I appreciate the skill of the constructors but there are also historical references which attract me, like walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or indeed the Clifton Suspension Bridge or taking the train across the Forth Bridge. Of course there are the modern wonders like the Milau viaduct or the Ponte Vasco da Gama in Lisbon etc. Boring! Maybe? I often film as I drive with a GoPro mounted on the windscreen, as I did this morning, and I have edited into a short timelapse which you can find here. Even if the images are boring I hope you enjoy the music. I also found that taking the country route on empty roads has a downside. The upside is you see the countryside better than you do on the motorways. The other side of the coin is that on roads equivalent to our B roads the maximum speed is 70 kph (43 mph) and on A Roads 80 kph (50 mph). Most are B class and in this part of Sweden often flat and straight. My plan for the day was scuppered within a short time on the country road to Torekov which took over 1 1/4 hours to go 65 km (40 miles) with zero traffic. It was not a disaster but meant I dropped a couple of planned stops and even then I was an hour later arriving in Gothenburg just in time to hit the rush hour traffic. The places along the way were Landscrona to programme the car and take a little walk, then Torekov, both summer resorts and finally Morups Tange a nature area and classic lighthouse, before a stop for electricity in a deserted 22 stall Tesla Supercharger station. All in all I enjoyed the day coping with a gusty south easterly breeze. Here in Gothenburg the Scandic is titled Center. I am not sure what centre they are meaning as it is in a large building site by the river. It has excellent, and, as is normal, very expensive parking, a pleasant roof top restaurant above the 14th floor and a comfortable room so all good. So to some pictures. I mentioned Torekov which is where the headling picture was taken. There were some quaint cottages and nice views out to sea and there were only two places open, an ice cream shop and the public toilet. There was plenty of holiday accomodation and a marina full of pleasure craft. I imagine it is humming in the summer. Landscrona is also a holiday destination but on a larger scale with an empty skate park and olympic sized swimming pool, crazy putting course and a ‘golf’ course where even I might make a putt or two. There is a citadel, which from the aerial shots is impressive but not for today and an impressive, and I’m guessing, hotel on a point. Morups Tange was more my cup of tea. To get to it you had to open and close a gate. Bizarrely when I openned the gate and drove through a couple arrived behind me and gestured that they would close the gate. The bizarre aspect is we did it in reverse on the way out! I do not intend to make toilets a theme but there was a very cute one here and I did love it being there. I do like a lighthouse and the buildings, including the toilet, were sporting that deep cedar colour familier from the Swedish travel guides. The landscape had been pretty consistantly flat from getting of the ferry at Hook of Holland so no surprise there was a windmill nearby. I mentioned an empty Supercharger station and this is what it looks like. I’ll finish with three snaps from the hotel, from the lobby outside my room, from the roof top bar and from the window in my room.
