Leknes to Tromso

Today has been a driving day with 493 km to travel from Leknes on the Lofoten Islands to Tromso almost 70 degrees north and the furthest I will go on this trip. I generally avoid traveling along a road in both directions, at least for journeys of a decent length, but I had no option today. There is only one road on to the islands and therefore only one road back. In today’s case there was a silver lining. When I went to the islands the weather was awful with almost no oppotunity to see the scenery. That meant that my observation of the eastern islands was confined to the road itself and images of mist and rain. I have included some pictures of what I missed on Wednesday, like the headline image, and now I am pleased I had to return along the E10. I drove almost the complete journey from Wednesday to within walking distance of Narvik before heading north for another 216 km. I had the pleasure of realtively empty fast roads with occasional showers and a rainbow along the way. There were autumn colours to enjoy with the birch leaves turning and I can confirm I am now in the arctic. The air temperature ranged from 8 to 11C for the run north and the heating was on in the car for the first time on this trip. Here the hotel is in the centre of Tromso and I was directed to the adjacent parking. It is genuinely under ground in a series of tunnels and galleries and appears to stretch for miles. Probably an exaggeration! It is pretty clever this high in the arctic as it will limit the impact of ovenight cold on most vehicles. I think it is acually heated. Anyway here are a few pictures starting back on the Lofoten Islands, six including the headline image. You can compare the church to the more close up view from Wednesday. There is even a ship wreck and, a feature of the islands, crystal clear water. The next three are from the road north. The final four photos are here in Tromso, including the car park, rainbow over my dinner spot, an excellent bistro, the library across the street and downtown Tromso on a Friday night.
