Sandnessjøen to Fauske - Into the Arctic
Monday, 15 September 2025 19:49
A milestone was achieved today as I entered the Arctic Circle. To be honest not much changed although the crossing takes place about 600m above sea level which at this latitude means we are above the tree line. I don’t much do selfies. I can remember three on my travels, at the Fin del Mundo in Ushuaia, on the South Kaibab Trail in the Grand Canyon and at the Crossroads on Highway 61 in Clarksdale Mississippi. Rare enough to be a headline for today. 1990 is important as the Arctic Circle is not fixed. it depends on the axial tilt of the Earth as it marks the most southerly latitude where the sun does not rise all day on the winter slstice and does not set all day on the summer solstice. It was at this latitude in 1990. It does not move far thourgh. When I opened the curtains in Sandnessjoen this morning an impressive crystal clear vista was there with a little sunshine and a dramatic sky which you can see below. It bode well for the day. As it happens sun was a precious commodity but it remained dry until I got within 30 minutes of my hotel here in Fauske. That is why there is an umbrella in the car. Once on my way I stopped at the spectacular Helgerland Bridge with a view along the fjord to Sandnessjoen and I have added a couple of pictures. My first major stop of the day was at Mo I Rana to see one of Anthony Gormley’s huge sculpures, Haveman. It is a little tricky to get to as it is offshore in a lovely housing area. Again I have added a few photos including the lovely houses, some with living roofs. A stop for a little charge and a coffee in Mo I Rana and it was off on the climb to the Arctic Circle. There is a little visitor centre, I noted, only open 10 - 17 hours. No-one lives for miles so all staff are commuters. A nice commute though. There are a number of memorials as well as the marker and snow on the mountains round about. Of course there were some happy trolls. From there it was largely downhill, steep in places and I stopped at the Northland National Park Center hoping for a snack as the information indicated a cafe but it was in fact a burger joint. Too much for lunch so I dipped into my travelling reserves, grabbed a picture of an "animals from scrap" sulpture and headed on down to Fauske. Although my destination for the night it was also an interemediate stop to charge the car for a loop out to bodo and back with a little walk at Saltstraumen to see the maelstrom, under another impressive bridge, where differential currents interact. It was a nice short walk with other interesing things to see. I shot a panorama with the iPhone which is included with a few others and then a few from Bodo after a couple from Fauske including their Jet d’Eau. I did not spend long in Bodo but liked the bell tower at the cathedral and a strange Jesus crucfied but with no cross. At the harbour this is a sizeable fishing fleet and there is no doubt where you are, whe you decipher the blocks.
