Stavanger to Kristiansand

It felt a bit like winding down today with the relatively short run south from Stavanger to Kristiansand, my last port of call for this trip in Norway. The majority of the drive was along the main highway E39, which even became a dual carriageway for a couple of short stretches including to the outskirts of Kristiansand. I did not start on E39 as I returned through the Ryfylke tunnel which is how I came to Stavanger. This is not any tunnel. It is the world's longest subsea road tunnel, at 14.4 km, and the deepest tunnel of any kind. The important point is you simply drive through for a modest toll. The reason for this route was to return to Lysefjord to view it from the road and the result was another ferry. This one from Oanes to Lauvvik which was on a very small ferry, not part of the national network and therefor not chargeable to my FerryPay account. Payment was by card with one of the two crew managing the loading and unloading. On the way across I had a nice chat with a Dutch couple with a camper van who were great fans of Scotland having made four camper van trips there over the years. From there it was small roads for about 20km to join the main highway which was remarkably quiet making for an easy run. As is the case with these road days I check the timing and then look for places of interest that I can accommodate with respect to my planned arrival at my destination. In this case there were really two with also a few viewpoints programmed into the navigation system. My main stop was at Flekkefjord and its Gronnes Batteri. What a nice little town it is with its white wooden buildings and a great bakery. The gun battery was a little quaint as you will see in the photos. Next, after a charge at Lyndal, was a recreation area at Risebank which is as near as was practical for me to reach the most Southerly point in Norway before turning East to Kristiansand. It was a very easy day but with little to photograph so here is what I captured starting with the view along the Lysefjord, above, where I was yesterday on the boat. The next three are at the ferry. When I arrived there was no signs of life and a little panic set in “was the ferry running”. A quick Internet check confirmed that the service was half hourly and it would be about 20 minutes until my crossing. I took a couple of photos and went to the ever available toilet at ferry ports and when I came out my Dutch conversationalists and a couple more cars had arrived and there was the tiny ferry coming in. The return trip for the ferry was a one vehicle ride and only just! I’ll jump straight to Flekkefjord and it’s battery for the next seven images. I liked the street art and the girl with upside down text is actually a tile on the promenade, of which there were many, some with words others just images. A nice little town. There are a couple of photos from Risebank where there were a few enjoying a little afternoon sunshine. There is a set up in the water as a play area which I am sure is popular in the summer. The last two photos were taken this evening. It was eerily quiet in the hub of the city with mainly empty restaurants, including my very good pizza place. As the earlier rain had relented I took a walk back along the waterfront and found the fortress nicely illuminated. I look forward to a gentle exploration of Kristiansand tomorrow.
