BRIAN REID PHOTOGRAPHER

Voss to Bergen
Friday, 26 September 2025 20:28
As expected, today had a relaxed feel with a short road trip stopping at a couple of fine waterfalls and pottering along the coast of the Hardanger Fjord stopping to enjoy the views and relax with a coffee at a camp site Kiosk while listening to some jazz, which sounded like Oscar Peterson. Sounds good and it was until I got to Bergen. It did not spoil the day but the car park that the hotel recommends is not, as they claim, 50m from the hotel but 250m and is six levels, each of about 100 cars, deep underground with only one lift. I was on level D and each time the lift opened it was full so I gave up and took the stairs. About 10 flights in all, with my luggage. Not a good start. There is another slight issue with the website. The hotel is indeed in the city centre, but actually the city shopping centre so there are almost no restaurants within sensible walking distance and those that are were fully booked tonight and tomorrow! The hotel has a sort of bistro which is OK but one of the few pleasures of being in a city is choice of places to eat. I’ll work out a solution tomorrow when I am less fatigued. Rant over. Sunshine was the order of the day, accept for Voss. As I was going to have an easy day I had decided to explore Voss after breakfast before heading to my first waterfall. It was 3C and completely fogged in but that can be interesing from a photography viewpoint, so I took my stroll which was just fine. The fog did not last long as I left the valley and by the time, less than half an hour, I was at the Skjervefossen, just in time for a coach full of Amercans to arrive. They did not walk far so had no impact. I should note that there was a coach full of Germans with a sort of Viking guide who arrived at Voss as I was taking my morning stroll. To be honest that was about it for coaches for the rest of the day. My route took me down to the Hardanger Fjord at the nice little town of Granvin where a ship was being loaded with lumber and I had the place to myself. This is quite a gentle fjord and most of the remainder of the day was spent along its shores. I stopped at Kvanndal with its ferry port and opposite a camp site. The ferry ports seem most times to have a waiting room and a toilet so are a good place to stop. In this case the camp site had a Kiosk which served a decent cup of coffee and had a little terrace to sit in the sun to enjoy it. Here was Oscar Peterson playing quietly from a large JBL speaker. The two guys running the place were very relaxed and after I sat down they brought me nice cushions for my chair. Hospitality when it is unexpected for the price of a coffee. A good way along the fjord there is a major town, Norheimsund, and it is here that my second waterfall is, the Steinsdalsfossen, a much bigger attraction with a large car park, cafe and souvenir shops, guarded by trolls. It is always difficult to give an idea of scale for features like these but in both cases there were people who I could capture in shot to give and idea of how big these waterfalls are. From there it was a gentle run along the fjord before an up and over to Bergen and my cardio-vascular training. The weather has warmed up and now the temperature is in the mid teens. In the Arctic I added some pressure to the tyres to keep them in the normal operating window and now they were running high. While charging here in Bergen I let out the air that I put in when I was in Narvik and now we are back to spec. Here are the pictures from the day. The headline image was taken at Kvanndal as a ferry approached as I finished my coffee. The light attracted me. Ferries feature in a lot of my fjord images as they add interest and are a feature of this scenery. I’ll go back to the start of the day with a few pictures from Voss. Then it is on to Skjervefossen. The first two shots are from across from and below the falls and there are walkers in first and cars in the second to indicate that this is a big cascade. I’ll follow with a selection of views along the fjord starting at Granvin. Further round I got a glimpse of edge of another glacier named, not surpisingl, Hardanger. So it is back to waterfalls with the impressive Steinsdalsfossen. Again a nice man stood at the bottom of the cascade for scale. As I dropped back down towards Bergen a monochrome view presented itself. Too good to miss. I’ll finish with coffee at the camp site and a toilet with a view at Skjervefossen. As you can see an annoying arrival in Bergen could not spoil a day like this.
