Wandering Around the Centre of Copenhagen

Tuesday, 9 September 2025 21:04

While at a gentle pace and interupted with some Metro rides and a short hop on a harbour bus I walked close to15 km today and seem no worse off as a result. I also had a break to try a local staple, Smorrebrod, for lunch in a nice pub off Nyhavn. It has been a grey day after an early morning shower with the sun coming out as I neared the end of my wander. With just a day I could not see all of the sights so picked a sample which allowed a sensible trip through a fair amount of the city centre. I always try to wander, sometimes a little lost in new cities. As I noted yesterday, the hotel is adjacent to Bella Center Metro station and the M1 line whisks you into the heart of the city in 20 minutes. I visited the Botanical gardens, passed the observatory, had a look outside the Orenburg Palace. Then it was down to the round tower, the old University Library and on to the Chritiansands Palace. Next it was on the M3 Metro to Osterport for the walk down to the Little Mermaid. A short walk along the harbour took me to Nordre Tolbod to jump on the harbour bus for the ferry ride to Nyhavn in time for a late lunch. Suitably fed and watered it was time to wander around Nyhavn, as the light improved, looking for interesting sights. It certainly has a unique aspect and it is no surprise it is a big attraction. It was not too busy with plenty available tables at the miriad of restaurants. That was about me done so walked back to the open oval of Kongens Nytrov and its Metro station for the ride back to the hotel. Very satisfying. The main concern was being hit by a bicycle as I occassionally looked the wrong way as apparently the Danes travel on the wrong side of the road! They start them young as you can see below.I note that there were lots of renovations going on restricting access to some attractions but this was not going to be an indoors day overall. I may come back and cover more of Denmark but this trip is focused on Norway. So here we go with a wistlestop review of my day. Of course the little Mermaid above was surrounded. How about Tycho Brahe, look him up, at the observatory which is now an AI research centre. Grey heron and a nice view in the Botanical Gardens. A couple of palaces with some guards on duty. Concern if you are a troll. Watch these Danes, as I said they drive on the wrong side of the road. Up the Round Tower and through the Library with some interesting art and books. Lots of bikes and a nice statue at Gammel Strand by the Metro station. Did I mention how cool the Metro is? The harbour bus is included in the public transport day pass, and is a little less strenuous than other ways to get around the harbour. The Brooklyn pub and its Smorrebrod is my kind of place. Just a man preparing the food behind the counter and a young waiter keeping things moving and twenty metres from the main Nyhavn strip. SO that brings us to Nyhaven. A walk across Kongens Nytrov to the Metro and then back for a cold drink at the hotel. I promised some snaps from the Tivoli Gardens from yesterday evening and they are at the end of the post.
